Google Docs Bad First Impression
December 15, 2009
I decided to have a look at Google Docs today as I wanted to work on a training course outline from both work and home. I logged into my Google Calendar account, and then selected the Documents option from the menu. I then created a document, and clicked save, to be presented with this error:
Sorry, a network error has prevented Google Docs from saving your changes. Please try again. If the problem persists, please stop working until you are able to re-establish a network connection, as your unsaved changes may be lost. Please also try the troubleshooting steps in the help article below http://docs.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=157630
Handily, going to the URL specified gives the error:
We're sorry, but the information you've requested cannot be found
Not the best experience for using new software!
Googling for the error message gives a forum where support was given by a Google employee, yet all answers and questions were done outside the forum, so there were no solutions listed. The employee would contact the person with the problem offline to discuss, and presumably the problem was sorted out.
Right down the bottom, four months after the thread was started, was a suggestion to use the site via SSL - https://docs.google.com instead of straight http. It works a treat.
If this were my product, I'd be mortified at such as rubbish experience for a first time user.
